Exotic Car Rental Insurance in Florida: What Coverage You Need
Insurance is the part of renting an exotic car that often surprises people. You can have the perfect car picked out, the dates confirmed and your deposit ready, and still be stuck because your policy doesn't cover a vehicle worth several hundred thousand dollars.
This guide explains how insurance works for exotic car rentals in Florida, what to ask your insurer, and what to do if you aren't covered. It's general information to help you prepare, not insurance or legal advice. Your insurer is the only one who can confirm what your policy covers.
The short version
- At Emiris, insurance is required for every rental and is not included in the daily rate.
- Full coverage is preferred, meaning coverage that extends to physical damage to the rented vehicle as well as liability.
- Many personal policies and credit card benefits limit or exclude exotic and high-value vehicles.
- If you don't have a suitable policy, tell your concierge. We will try to help you find coverage before your rental.
Why exotic cars are different
A standard rental car might be worth $25,000 to $40,000. The cars in the Emiris collection range from luxury SUVs to the Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren 570S, and many are worth several times that.
That matters because insurance policies have limits. If your policy covers rental cars only up to a certain value, or only up to the value of the car you own, a serious incident in an exotic car could leave you responsible for the difference. Florida's minimum required auto coverage is designed for ordinary cars and is far below the value of an exotic.
Types of coverage to understand
Liability coverage
Liability covers damage or injury you cause to other people and their property. It doesn't pay to repair the car you're driving.
Collision coverage
Collision covers damage to the vehicle you're driving if you hit another car or object. For an exotic rental, this is the coverage that protects you from the cost of repairing the rental itself.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive covers non-collision damage such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, flooding and storm damage. In Florida, where heavy storms are common, this matters.
"Full coverage"
"Full coverage" isn't an official policy type. People use it to mean liability plus collision and comprehensive. When we say full coverage is preferred, we mean coverage that protects both other people and the rented vehicle itself.
Other costs to ask about
When a high-value car is damaged, costs can go beyond the repair itself, such as the time the car is off the road. Ask your insurer which of these costs your policy would cover if you rented an exotic car.
Does my personal car insurance cover a rental exotic?
Sometimes, but often not fully. Call your insurer and ask these questions:
- Does my policy extend to rental cars? Many do for personal use, but check.
- Does it cover exotic or high-value vehicles? Some policies exclude them or cap the value.
- What is the maximum value of a rental vehicle you'll cover? Compare it to the value of the car you plan to rent.
- Do my collision and comprehensive coverages apply to the rental? Liability alone won't cover damage to the rental.
- What deductible would apply?
- Can you provide proof of coverage that names the rental? Ask how quickly they can send it.
Write down the name of the person you spoke with and ask for confirmation in writing if possible.
Does my credit card cover exotic car rentals?
Many credit cards offer rental car benefits, but they commonly exclude exotic, luxury and high-value vehicles, and some exclude certain makes entirely. Benefits may also cap the vehicle value or apply only when you decline other coverage.
Before relying on your card:
- Read the card's guide to benefits for rental car coverage.
- Look for exclusions covering exotic, luxury or expensive vehicles.
- Call the benefits administrator and ask specifically about the make, model and value of the car you plan to rent.
In many cases, a credit card benefit alone won't be enough for an exotic rental.
What if I don't have suitable insurance?
Don't let it stop your plans. Tell your Emiris concierge. We will try to help you find a policy that covers your rental before your dates. The earlier you raise it, the more time there is to sort it out, so mention it when you first inquire.
Insurance and international visitors
If you're visiting Orlando from abroad, your home policy may not extend to driving in the United States. Check with your insurer before you travel, and contact our concierge early so there's time to arrange coverage if needed.
Additional drivers need coverage too
If someone else will drive, they can be added to your rental agreement as long as they are 21 or older, have a valid driver's license and are covered by insurance. Check that the policy you're relying on covers every driver, not just you.
Your insurance checklist before you book
- I've called my insurer and confirmed my policy covers rented vehicles
- I've confirmed it covers a vehicle of this make and value
- I know my collision and comprehensive deductibles
- I've checked my credit card's rental benefits and exclusions
- I can get proof of coverage before my rental date
- Every additional driver is covered too
- If I'm not covered, I've told my Emiris concierge so we can try to help
Other requirements to rent
Insurance is one of several requirements. At Emiris you'll also need:
- Every driver 21 or older
- A valid driver's license
- A refundable security deposit, with the amount depending on the vehicle and confirmed by your concierge
- A signed rental agreement, which also sets your mileage allowance (starting at 100 miles per day depending on the vehicle)
See all details on our rental requirements page.
Tips to protect yourself during your rental
- Document the car at handoff. Walk around with your concierge and take photos and video of the wheels, bumpers and paint.
- Drive conservatively. In a low, wide car it's easy to catch a curb, driveway or parking stop, so take slow-speed maneuvers carefully.
- Park carefully. Choose end spots and well-lit areas, and use valet where available.
- Watch Florida weather. Avoid deep standing water after storms and raise convertible roofs before rain.
- Don't lend the car. Only drivers added to your rental agreement should drive. Each additional driver must be 21 or older and covered by insurance too.
- Report issues immediately. If something happens, contact your concierge and your insurer right away.
